Great Sand Dunes National Park
Great Sand Dunes National Park is located in southern Colorado. It was a change in scenery from the mountains, lakes and jagged red rocks that we had been exploring in Colorado.
Enjoying the dunes, Great Sand Dunes NP, Colorado
As we drove into the park, there was a sand sledding rental shop just outside the park. We rented a sand sled the next morning before the sun kissed sand heated up for the day. The boys enjoyed sand sledding until the sun became too warm for the incline up. I enjoyed a foot soak in the seasonal Medano Creek after a couple runs on the sand sled.
The evening we arrived, we went exploring on the dunes just before sunset. The males in the family walked up to the highest dune they could find while a sand-filled breeze battled our faces. I opted for the second highest dune.
Sledding the dunes at the Great Sand Dunes NP, Colorado
We stayed a night in the Pinon Flats Campground within the National Park. Our site #56 was exactly what we were looking for. Sufficient space for our 6 person tent with enough pinon trees to give us some semblance of privacy. We didn't have much of a view of the sand dunes from our campsite, but both the sand dunes and a view of it was just a short walk away.
